Zen & the Open Road celebrating the 50th anniversary of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig
Inspired by Robert Pirsig’s semi-autobiographical novel and its follow-up, Lila, this exhibition explores themes of journey, philosophy, and the natural world through the lens of Pirsig’s cross-country motorcycle ride and transatlantic sailing voyage.
Grounded in close reading, visual research, and object study, I developed a cohesive graphic strategy that foregrounded the vivid natural landscapes described in Pirsig’s narratives. Immersive imagery of open roads and expansive seascapes formed a bold and dynamic visual framework, creating an environment that invites engagement and emotional connection—even for visitors unfamiliar with Pirsig’s work.
Color played a central role in unifying the exhibit. Particularly influenced by the blue and green tones of Pirsig’s 1960s motorcycle maintenance manual—featured in the show—I integrated these hues across interpretive labels and environmental graphics. This approach established continuity between the ephemera on view and the larger visual system, enhancing both atmosphere and clarity of communication.
For the left-side sailing mural, a gradual transition from seascape imagery into Pirsig’s original nautical chart created a subtle visual conclusion to the exhibition experience.
