Papercutting
Over the past few years, I have leaned into paper-cutting for my artistic practice—a medium I return to for its versatility and uniqueness. Working with paper allows me to construct scenes that feel at once delicate and a bit strange. My approach often blends some traditional techniques of Pennsylvania German Scherenschnitte with design, incorporating digital photography and post-processing to create layered, atmospheric compositions.
My goal for these works is for them to fall somewhere between beauty and discomfort. By playing with light and the tactility of real materials, I aim able to create environments that are grounded in both reality and imagination. Many of these compositions emerge as single pieces, while others serve as illustrations for independent book design projects.
Whether through quiet landscapes or more haunting, figurative forms, my paper art practice continues to shape my work as a designer.
The Dead Calf - Illustrated book
This booklet is my artistic/designer’s interpretation of Wendell Berry’s poem, The Dead Calf. These illustrations echo the tragic self reflective nature of the piece which asks how good a person is, and how easily they can belong to the world. There’s a sincere feeling of disconnection and sadness in the poem which I emphasize with highly emotive visuals that make use of paper-cutting, light, and photography.
